Das Buch untersucht die Entstehungsgeschichte der Texte des Alten Testaments, in denen von der Bundeslade die Rede ist. In ihnen haben sich weit weniger historisch zuverl?sige Quellen bewahrt als bisher angenommen. Im Salomonischen Tempel etwa hat die Lade wohl nie gestanden. Das Gros der Texte ist hingegen ein Zeugnis des Ringens des werdenden Judentums mit den alten ??berlieferungen. Dies zeigt sich beispielhaft in der (erfolglosen) Suche der Forschung nach dem Inhalt der Lade. Ein Kapitel widmet sich schlie??lich ihrer Bezeugung in den Texten aus Qumran am Toten Meer.
